In acute hepatitis, the inflammation occurs abruptly and can cause severe symptoms. There are numerous causes, including alcohol abuse and medications, but most acute hepatitis is caused by the hepatitis viruses discussed below.<\/p>\n Hepatitis B or C can lead to more chronic liver disease and sometimes liver failure. Otherwise, acute viral hepatitis usually goes away on its own.<\/p>\n Hepatitis A<\/strong> is the most common of the hepatitis viruses and the least serious. An estimated 50% of Americans have been infected with hepatitis A at some time and, as a result, are immune to it and carry antibodies to it. The virus is more common in areas where standards of sanitation and hygiene are poor. Infected people temporarily carry the virus in their blood and shed it in their bowel movements.<\/p>\n During the brief infectious period (which usually lasts 6 days to 6 weeks), the virus can spread. Transmission is usually through the ingestion of food or water that has been contaminated by infected fecal material. It can also be spread by eating shellfish that has not been properly cooked. Recovery usually takes 1 or 2 months. In rare cases (usually in people over 40), hepatitis A virus infection can lead to acute liver failure and even death. However, in most people, recovery is complete.<\/p>\n Hepatitis B<\/strong> is transmitted by infected blood (usually through blood transfusions and needles shared by intravenous drug abusers), sexual contact with infected semen, and, possibly, contact with infected saliva. Babies can become infected at birth if the mother is infected. Health care workers and people who work in institutions that house high-risk individuals are also vulnerable to the virus.<\/p>\n Some people who become infected with the virus never develop hepatitis and never become ill from it. Others develop mild to severe cases. On occasion, hepatitis B infection can cause acute liver failure. It usually takes 1 to 4 months to recover from the initial attack of hepatitis. A substantial number of people become carriers or develop chronic hepatitis, and some of these people develop cirrhosis and chronic liver failure. Hepatitis C<\/strong>, once referred to as non-A, non-B hepatitis, is spread in the same way as hepatitis B, although there is controversy over how easily it can be spread by sexual contact. Many people infected with the hepatitis C virus do not develop acute hepatitis. Others develop hepatitis that can be very severe but that rarely leads to acute liver failure. People with the acute form of the illness recover within 3 to 4 months. Hepatitis D<\/strong> is a virus that by itself cannot cause hepatitis or other diseases. But when someone is infected with both the hepatitis B virus and the hepatitis D virus, a severe form of acute hepatitis usually develops. Hepatitis D appears to be transmitted through close personal contact rather than exposure to blood.<\/p>\n Hepatitis E<\/strong> is a virus similar to hepatitis A but is very rare in the United States. It can be very dangerous to pregnant women, about 20% of whom develop life threatening destruction of the liver with hepatitis E.<\/p>\n There is an incubation period between the time you become infected with a hepatitis virus and the time you first develop symptoms of acute hepatitis. This incubation period varies depending on the virus: hepatitis A, 6 days to 6 weeks; hepatitis B, 4 to 12 weeks; and hepatitis C, on average, 7 weeks.<\/p>\n Symptoms of acute hepatitis are general and easy to confuse with other conditions; they include loss of energy and appetite, nausea, vomiting, itchy skin, abdominal pain (in the upper right portion of the abdomen), fever, and tea-colored urine.<\/p>\n These symptoms are followed by jaundice (yellowing of the whites of the eyes and skin) and sometimes weight loss. In rare cases, symptoms are very severe and life threatening.<\/p>\n Some people with hepatitis B or hepatitis C virus infection have no symptoms or very mild symptoms of acute hepatitis at first, but then, years later, develop symptoms of chronic hepatitis.<\/p>\n Symptoms (particularly sudden jaundice) make a diagnosis of hepatitis very likely, but blood tests are necessary to establish it. Treatment is aimed at helping you feel more comfortable. Although it is not necessary for recovery, you may feel better if you rest in bed. A<\/p>\n high-calorie diet may be prescribed, with the majority of food eaten in the morning to prevent nausea later in the day. Acute Hepatitis<\/h2>\n
\nWhen infants become infected with the hepatitis B virus at birth, there is a 90% chance that they will develop chronic hepatitis later in life. In contrast, if healthy young adults become infected with the hepatitis B virus, there is only about a 1% chance that they will develop chronic hepatitis.<\/p>\n
\nMore than 50% of people with a hepatitis C virus infection develop chronic hepatitis and some develop cirrhosis and chronic liver failure and\/ or liver cancer. An estimated 3.9 million Americans have chronic hepatitis from the hepatitis C virus (worldwide, 70 million people are infected).
\nIn the United States, 10,000 people each year die of chronic liver disease from the hepatitis C virus. Some are or were intravenous drug users. Others were infected from blood transfusions they received before 1990 (before the virus was discovered and blood was tested for the virus).
